การกำหนดให้ MySQL ใช้ utf-8 เป็นค่า default สามารถทำได้โดยการแก้ไข /etc/my.cnf ดังนี้

[client]
default-character-set=utf8
[mysql]
default-character-set=utf8
[mysqld]
default-character-set = utf8
collation-server = utf8_unicode_ci
init-connect='SET NAMES utf8'
character-set-server = utf8
